Remote Lidar Methane Sensor (RELMS) by Hedgefog, San Pedro, California is one of the innovations which received around $16.7 m fund from US DOE

Hedgefog is going to keep working on developing a device that use lasers in order to measure the amount of methane emissions that hydro power reservoirs produce. With the help of this technology, it is possible to scan areas of the reservoir that are inaccessible using the measurement equipment that is now available. This enables measurements to be more precise and comprehensive. By utilising this technology, stakeholders in the hydropower industry will be able to better evaluate and comprehend the impact that above-ground reservoirs have on the environment. This innovation was recently awarded funds by USDOE as one of the 25 small businesses working on and for  Water Power Research and Development.

Extreme weather events, such as intense storms, heavy rainfall, prolonged droughts, heatwaves, and cold snaps, can significantly impact hydropower operations.

Extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall, droughts, heatwaves, and cold snaps, can significantly impact hydropower operations. These events can overwhelm dam reservoirs, reduce water availability, increase evaporation rates, and cause ice formation in reservoirs and rivers. Dam safety and structural integrity are compromised, especially in regions with increased heavy storms. Reservoir management is also a challenge, as it requires balancing storage capacity for floodwaters and water levels for power generation. Sedimentation can also occur due to increased rainfall and flooding. Operational challenges include variability in water flow, which complicates energy production planning and forecasting. The unpredictability of water availability can affect market prices and contractual obligations, leading to increased reliance on alternative energy sources. To mitigate these impacts, the hydropower industry is adopting adaptation strategies, including advanced weather forecasting and modeling, infrastructure upgrades, and flexible operation and maintenance. These strategies aim to improve resilience, reduce reliance on hydropower, and ensure the sustainability of hydropower operations.

"Energy and water are deeply and fundamentally connected"...IEA50

Energy and water are fundamentally interconnected, with water essential for energy production, extraction, and biofuel cultivation. Energy accounts for 10% of global freshwater withdrawals, while water is vital for extraction, treatment, and delivery. Rising demand and constraints due to economic growth and climate change threaten energy and water security.
